The Philosophy of Osteopathy is what sets it apart from other forms of manual medicine where the key principle is based on holistic health functioning together in an integrated manner. Current evidence suggests that the best form of pain management associated with musculoskeletal conditions includes a combination of physical interventions, such as Osteopathy, lifestyle changes, and proactive exercise regimes.

Here at Casey Central Osteopathy your treating Osteopath will assess and treat multiple regions of your body to ensure that the areas above and below where you’re experiencing pain are addressed as part of our holistic approach. Your Osteopath will tailor the treatment to suit your needs with a multimodal approach consisting of a variety of structural hands-on techniques such as;

• Deep and soft tissue release
• Articulation and mobilisation
• Trigger point therapy
• Manipulation of the spine
• Stretching
• Lymphatic drainage
• Myofascial release

Shockwave Therapy also known as Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT), is considered to be a non-invasive procedure that produces acoustic waves creating an inflammatory response. This results in increased blood flow and an influx good healing cells to the damaged area to help with regeneration and therefore speeds up your recovery. Research out there suggests that Shockwave is a highly effective treatment protocol for chronic conditions and tendinopathies. Shockwave has been proven to have an average success rate of 80% for chronic pain and tendon pathologies such as;

• Achilles tendinopathy
• Lateral Epicondylitis
• Plantar Fasciitis
• Patellar tendinopathy
• Trochanteric/Gluteal tendinopathy and associated bursitis
• Calcific tendonitis of the shoulder
• Adhesive capsulitis (Frozen shoulder)
• Chronic lower back pain

Superficial Dry Needling utilises fine sterilised acupuncture needles to effectively treat those annoying knots within your muscles. A knot or what we refer to as a “myofascial trigger point” is simply a bundle of muscular fibres stimulated into a constant contracted state. You can often feel these knots within your muscles in the region of pain you are experiencing. You will feel a light prick sensation as the needle is inserted into the knot, throughout the treatment you may also feel a tingling sensation in the area being treated. Benefits of superficial dry needling include reducing inflammation and therefore pain, relaxation and improvement of sleep patterns.

The stainless steel needles we use are premium quality, ultra-thin and approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA).

Cupping Therapy is an old Chinese technique where a cup is applied the skin with negative pressure is then applied within the cup. This lightly draws the skin and superficial muscles to the surface. Gentle gliding of cups can also be applied to improve the efficiency of the treatment.  It is very useful in rejuvenating the body by stretching tight muscles and fascia, activating the lymphatic system and promoting circulation. Evidence-based studies out there have proven that cupping has had good analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects.

While the outcome of Cupping may leave you with round red marks on your body, it is NOT as painful as it looks. This discolouration is due to blood being drawn to the surface, it will generally subside within a week. It is completely normal if you experience some mild post-treatment soreness or fatigue after a treatment, however, this is no different from how you would after a normal Osteopathic consult.

Like any other technique our Osteopaths may utilize during treatment – there are always potential adverse reactions and outcomes to a particular technique chosen for treatment. Your qualified Osteopath will ensure that a detailed history and examination has been taken to make sure that these above treatment options are suitable for you and that all risks are minimised to outweigh the benefits.

As part of our services, our Osteopaths will prescribe each individual patient with a tailored exercise and rehabilitation program using our web-based exercise platform Physitrack. This may be in the form of;
• Stretching
• Strengthening with resistance band or weights
• Core stability exercises
• Rotator cuff stability exercises
• Balance and proprioception
• Breathing techniques
• Swiss ball or balance ball exercises
• Pelvic floor exercises
• Functional dynamic movement
• Body conditioning
• Hydrotherapy exercises

Your Osteopath will activate a private login code to Physitrack and you will be able to access your video exercise program from anywhere in the world providing you have an active internet connection. That’s right, unfortunately there are no more excuses for not doing your exercises! Can’t you already tell that we are serious about your recovery?
